Arid climate and strong winds have made SoCal a hotbed for brush fires this week. Los Angeles area firefighters did not relax on Labor Day. Instead, they responded to a fast moving wildfire in Sun Valley on Monday. The cause? Children illegally playing with fireworks.
Small Brush Fire Being Tackled in Lake View Terrace Area [UPDATED]
A small brush fire, covering an estimated 5-7 acres, is burning in the Lake View Terrace area, say the Los Angeles Fire Department. 65 firefighters from the LAFD, as well as Angeles National Forest ground personnel and the Los Angeles County Fire Department--with a helicopter and handcrew--are working on the blaze, which is being fanned by 5 mph breeze.
Brush Fires Swallow Acres in Malibu, Brea Today
Two brush fires in two counties keep local firefighters on their feet today, with a small blaze in Malibu, and a larger one in Brea.
The Malibu fire broke out a bit before noon, according to L.A. Now, and was handled by Los Angeles County Fire, who had the blaze out by around 1:15 p.m. with two acres consumed and no structures threatened.
Time to Trim Your Brush: Fire Season Is Upon Us
There have been a few small brush fires throughout the Southland in the past week, and as we head into summer, the threat of more, and larger, blazes is imminent. To that end, local authorities are urging residents in brush-dense communities to take on the important task of clearing their properties in preparation for fire season.
Rubidoux Brush Fire Contained, 45 Acres Burned
A brush fire in Riverside County that blazed through 45 acres of light grass is now contained, reports ABC7. The fire was spotted at 12:20 p.m. in the area of Pacific Avenue and Canal Street in Rubidoux and spread quickly causing concern, however no injuries or evacuations were reported.
Crown Fire Almost Fully Contained
As of early this morning, firefighters working diligently to control the Crown Fire have met with much success, and have reached a reported 87% containment, according to LA Now.
Crown Fire 62% Contained, Firefighters Face Hot Temps, Winds Today
Thanks to cool temps overnight and calmer winds, firefighters have been able to achieve 62% containment of the Crown Fire that has been burning in the Palmdale area since Thursday afternoon, according to LA Now.
Crown Fire Continues to Burn in Northern L.A. County
Of the three fires ignited in northern Los Angeles County on Thursday afternoon, one remains a threat as it continues to grow. The Crown Fire has scorched some 8,000 acres between Acton and the Palmdale/Lancaster area. The fire was first reported at 2:22 p.m. and may have started in a vacant lot where "workers were apparently using a hammer to extract nails from tire rims," according to the LA Times.
Brush Fires Break Out in Agua Dulce, Lancaster
At least two brush fires are burning in northern Los Angeles County this afternoon. In Agua Dulce, near Acton, a blaze that broke out around 2 p.m. has burned through some 25 to 30 acres, according to KCAL-TV. At first it burned through grassy fields, but recently went into thicker brush, prompting 15- to 20-foot flame lengths. Two abandoned structures have burned, but no homes are currently threatened, reported the news broadcast. 200 firefighters are on scene. There is another fire burning near Lancaster in Fairmont. It has burned about 30 acres, according to the LA Times.
State of Emergency Called as Fires Burn in Sequoia National Forest & Near Tehachapi
The immediate Los Angeles area has so far been spared of major wildfires this year, but further up north, things got rough yesterday. More than 15,000 acres have been charred and around than 2,300 people have been evacuated in two blazes burning in the southern Central Valley's Kern County, prompting Governor Arnold Schwarzengger last night to declare a state of emergency.
Brush Breaks Out in the Newhall Pass, Closes Northbound 5 Fwy
A brush fire that has broken out on the eastside of the 5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass has severely slowed traffic from Los Angeles to the Santa Clarita Valley. The five-acre fire eruprted this afternoon and is threatening a dozen homes in the Newhall area, according to CBS2. The California Highway Patrol hopes to open at least one lane on the northbound 5 Freeway soon, but recommends commuters take the 14 Freeway and avoid The Old Road. Update: The fire has grown to about 15 acres. Update #2: The fire is reportedly almost under control, but traffic is still hellish.
30-Acre 'Neenach' Wildfire Burning in Lancaster
The "Neenach" Fire in Lancaster broke out this morning and has now burned over 30 acres in the area near Highway 138 and 230th Street [map], according to cbs2. The blaze has been classified as "second-alarm," and fire crews are on scene. There are no injuries, say authorities, and currently no structures are threatened. The cause of the wildfire is now under investigation.

2 Men Plead No Contest to 'recklessly starting' 2007 Malibu Fire
The 2007 Malibu Corral Canyon fire tore through 4,900 acres of land, destroyed over 50 homes, and left 6 firefighters injured. Today, the two men who are responsible for igniting the blaze pleaded no contest to charges of " recklessly starting a fire causing injury and causing an inhabited structure to burn," according to the LA Times.
Calm Winds Aid Overnight Effort to Fully Contain Pedley Fire
A small wildfire that broke out yesterday afternoon in Riverside County became a full night's work for 235 firefighters who were able to get the blaze fully contained by 4:30 this morning, according to an AP report.
Brush Fire Prompts Evacuations in Riverside County
We've been noticing more fire alerts as of late. Today a brush fire in Riverside County is moving towards a Glen Avon mobile home park, prompting evacuations, according to CBS2. On Saturday, a one-acre grass fire ignited just north of Beverly Hills in the Santa Monica Mountains, and a few more small grass fires have been reported around the city. Stay safe out there and if you live in a fire-prone area, be prepared!
1st Reforestation Project in Station Fire Burn Area OK'd
$1.5 million will go towards planting over a half million trees in an area of the Angeles National Forest that scarred by the Station Fire last year. The Board of the Air Quality Management District today approved the action, which uses money from a Chevron mitigation to offset carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the expansion of its refinery in El Segundo. "Chevron’s project is the first in the region where greenhouse gas emission reductions were required as part of an environmental analysis," noted a news release.
Lawmakers Consider Smoking Ban in California's State Parks
California could soon be the first state to ban smoking in its state parks system, as the Assembly votes today on a bill that aims to to reduce litter, secondhand smoke, and wildfire threats, according to the Huffington Post.
Teen Charged with Setting 2 Fires in Yucaipa
The teenager arrested on suspicion of setting at least 14 fires in the Yucaipa area has been charged with setting two of them, reports the LA Times. One of the fires was in the Crafton Hills area. The total acreage burned under the fires allegedly set by 16-year-old Ricky Sean Lukacs is around 1,000.
Anaheim Hills Brush Fire Now 15 Percent Contained
A brush fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in Anaheim Hills is now reported as being 15 percent contained, according to CBS2. Gusty Santa Ana winds helped bush the blaze through "60 acres of Southern California hills before firefighters reduced it Wednesday to a smoldering -- but still dangerous -- black scar." While no homes are threatened and no evacuations ordered, the Orange County Fire Authority still caution that the 50 mph winds expected later today could resurrect the flames. Full containment should happen on Thanksgiving Day, when throughout the Southland we can expect unseasonably warm temps and more hot winds.

With our Thanksgiving-week weather forecast calling for high temps and Santa Ana winds we're also finding that our air is full of "ash and dust from areas burned by recent wildfires [which] is being blown across Los Angeles County," according to CBS2.
Brush Fire Breaks Out in the Anaheim Hills [Updated]
Scores of people left Disneyland disappointed tonight because the fireworks show was canceled. There was good reason for that--a brushfire has broken out in the Anaheim Hills. The wind-driven 5-acre blaze has shut down the 241 Tollroad between the 91 Freeway and Santiago Canyon Road.
The Station Fire is Still Burning
Although the massively large Station Fire was fully contained last month, it still burns in the Angeles National Forest. That may be confusing, but we'll back up to the common definitions of containment and control, as given by officials in most fire updates to the public:
Diamond Bar Brush Fire Appears to be Started by Pickup Truck
It appears that this afternoon's fast-moving fire in Diamond Bar was not caused intentionally, but by a pickup truck that had a small fire its bed. One story is that an burning debris was flying out of the bed of the truck, unbeknownst to the driver and passenger. Another is that a faulty cadyilac converter was sending sparks out from under the truck, according to KCAL-TV. Nevertheless, the truck and people inside have been detained by LA County Sheriff's Deputies.
Brush Fire Breaks Out in Diamond Bar, Arson Speculated
A large fire this afternoon is burning right next to homes in Diamond Bar, about one-half mile from the 60 freeway, reports KABC-TV. It began around 11:45 a.m. Because there are several different start points, the word "arson" is being thrown around a lot, but not by officials. There are no evacuations at this point and no reports of damage or injuries. Update: The cause of the fires might be from a pickup truck. More info here.
Small Brush Fire Ignites Near Angeles Nat'l Forest in Tujunga [Updated]
The Los Angeles Fire Department is reporting a 1-acre fire near the neighborhood of Tujunga in the Northeast Valley. First reported at 5:09 p.m. from the 6300 block of Day Street, the fire is burning in steep rugged terrain. Over the phone, LAFD Spokesman Brian Humphrey says the nearest home to flames is about one mile away, therefore no evacuations have been ordered.
