One Dish Wonder: Black Cat Bakery's Bibimbap-Style Farro

There are a lot of delicious dishes on the menu at the Black Cat Bakery and Café, but none so far have proven as memorable or tantalizing as their Bibimbap-style Farro, a hearty, healthy, beautiful breakfast item that is an absolute must-try. Black Cat opened recently in the vacated Mani's spot on Fairfax, and offers patrons a bright, cheery spot to linger over a hot cup of coffee, a variety of pastries from Homeboy bakery, and breakfast and lunch dishes. more ›

Recession Obsession (Redux): Japanese Breakfast at Lunch Time

A Recession Obsession is, 1) a meal so great that it stays in your mind long after digestion's end, and, 2) plays nice with your sensitive wallet. Is there a better place than Los Angeles to eat a wide variety of amazing food that so happens to be inexpensive? Probably not. We're as lucky as we are well fed. In our last Recession Obsession we got into the tacos of El Taurino Suadero. more ›

Bea Bea's: Who's Down for Oreo Pancakes?

             + 1 more

Burbank is rife with coffee shops, yet somehow good food manages to elude them. At least Frank's makes real milkshakes from real ice cream, but I'm still pissed off that the attached motel tore down the zigzag Googie roof. And don't even get me started on the Coral Cafe and Lancers, where the customers all look like Ralph Steadman drawings. more ›

Bite This: It's National Coffee Cake Day

Bite This: It's National Coffee Cake Day

You were probably just thinking: "Man, Coffee Cake gets no respect!" And you're almost right. In a city that worships the cupcake, the red velvet pancake, and those steel cut oats your trainer insists you start the day with, there's little room for mention all the other 364 days of the year for the good old fashioned coffee cake. Since we're suckers for oddball food celebrations, it just so happens that April 7th is National Coffee Cake Day. more ›

Hip to Be Square: Today Is International Waffle Day

We can thank the Swedes for this food celebration. Timed to be precisely 9 months to the day before Christmas, Våffeldagen (aka International Waffle Day) is the day that celebrates the arrival of spring, and the impending arrival of the Baby Jesus, since March 25th is "the day the Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she was pregnant." more ›

You Rise, They Shine… Breakfast on Santa Monica’s Montana Ave.

             + 1 more

In a town filled with people who “work from home,” “work the dinner shift,” enjoy expensive expensed breakfast “meetings,” or simply “don’t work,” you’d think that, like coffee shops, breakfast spots would be one of the most popular eateries to open. Sure there are great places around town in random locations with zero atmosphere aside from the amassed a.m. crowd lingering outside for a table. But come on, LA is the place to see and be seen--right? more ›

West Meets East: Brunch at Rockwell, VT

It's just a shade before noon on a Sunday, you're in Los Feliz, and you're in the mood for brunch. A couple of weeks ago we addressed this dilemma by heading up to the outdoorsy-meets-clubby environs of Rockwell, VT for a cocktail-soaked brunch that was just what we needed. more ›

Lines Build for Free Breakfast Across the City

Denny's does the free breakfast thing every once in awhile and today's that day. Of course, the lines are expected to be long at any Dennys location. Kingsley Anyanwu compared it to a "Hollywood club" on Twitter after he passed by one. You've got until 2 p.m. to take advantage. more ›

Happy Pancake Month, or Something LIke That

Wait, maybe it's just the last week of February. Or is it Valentine's Day Week? What about the 23rd, claimed as IHOP National Pancake Day? more ›

Quick Bite: LA Mill's Butternut Squash Polenta

Quick Bite: LA Mill's Butternut Squash Polenta

We've done breakfast at LA Mill before, and the menu has remained generally the same, which means if you know what you like there, chances are you'll be able to get it. And even though our LA "cold snap" is already a distant memory and we're back to watching the palm trees nod in the sunny breezes, our ingredients still have seasonality, which is why LA Mill's Butternut Squash Polenta made for the perfect December breakfast the other day when we stopped by the Silver Lake coffee boutique to pick up some gift beans (yes, we take our own advice). more ›

Recession Obsession: $3 Breakfast in Culver City

Recession Obsession: $3 Breakfast in Culver City

“Oh, look at that place,” said a friend of a small coffee shop tucked away behind a Downtown Culver City parking structure. “We should totally go there sometime.” “Yeah riiight,” I replied snarkily. “Who would voluntarily grub at a coffee shop in an alley?” For a moment, I forgot who I was, because the answer clearly was: this Recession Obsessionst. more ›

A Buttermilk Truck Sneak Peek: Red Velvet Pancakes, Hawaiian Bread French Toast & More...

For past week or so, the people behind the Buttermilk Truck have been sneaking around town, previewing its food to whoever came upon it. Although the truck officially debuts Wednesday evening with its late-night menu (think fried chicken and waffles and the Buttermilk Brick--hash browns, eggs over easy, buttermilk biscuit and a housemade chorizo gravy), the truck arrived for a not-so-secret sneak peek of its morning menu at yesterday's Silver Lake Art Craw event at Barnsdall Art Park. more ›

Buttermilk Truck Announces Launch Location

Buttermilk Truck Announces Launch Location

For the past couple of months, two trucks have teased us as they prepped for their debut. The Grilled Cheese Truck tempted us with delicious photos before launching with great success last week. Up next is the Buttermilk Truck, which launches next week Wednesday at The Brig in Venice. With a breakfast and a late-night menu, there's a handful of items that sound savory. For example: the Hawaiian Bread Breakfast Sliders have Portuguese sausage, sauteed onions and shoyu scrambled eggs on Hawaiian bread. more ›

Location, Location, Location: Brunch at Tavern

Once upon a time, 11648 San Vicente Blvd in Brentwood was a Hamburger Hamlet. Yawn, right? Yes, the Hamlet had its heyday here in Los Angeles, but it's been a long time since the chain served anything to write (home) about. But if the three most important considerations in real estate are location, location, and yup, you guessed it, location, well, Tavern wound up with a prime piece of it. What you might not ever guess--if you didn't know it--is that this beautiful eatery, with its skylight-lit atrium dining room, plush seating, warm gray tones matched with airy cream colors, and wooden floors was once a Hamlet. more ›
