  • Sunny Day: Gustavo Dudamel Will Appear on Sesame Street

Gustavo Dudamel has had a lot on his plate lately: this weekend, he'll lead over 1,000 musicians in performing Mahler's Eighth Symphony, and no doubt he had a hand in planning this year's newly-released Hollywood Bowl line-up. But that didn't stop the L.A. Philharmonic's superstar conductor from taking some time out for the kids by filming an upcoming guest appearance on "Sesame Street."

  • 2010: Classic Rock Record Collector's Year In Review

It was an interesting year for fans of the old guard. As time passes, our beloved dinosaurs are being forced to adapt or die, in an environment in which their only property of value - material recorded a long time ago - can no longer be sold for a profit. They have responded by creating box-set packages large and gaudy enough to appear to be worth something.

  • Music To End A Decade: The Best Of 2010

Photo by auggie tolosa via Flickr In a few hours, the Year of the Rabbit will be back-kicking its way into 2011 with all the hippity hoppity hooliganism and excessive mating that the name suggests. While you still can, check out what you may have missed during the Year of the (Eye of the) Tiger. There are top releases from LA bands, what the magazines said, interviews, transmissions from a radio sweetheart, newspaper input,...

  • Midnight Movie: Kirk Gibson's Big Home Run

The last time the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series was 1988. The above video was a big part of the how and why of that title....

  • Artist Takes Over Abandoned Telephone Booths with Bee Hives

Photo by ...bumblebee via Flickr CurbedLA first noticed these paper mache bee hives appearing around town in company abandoned public telephone booths. Alas, last Friday, mystery solved. The artist, bumblebee, has a Flickr page and a statement: Telephone companies have been abandoning their public telephone booths by taking out the phones and leaving the structures beehind. (Probably due to the rise in cell phone users.) I want to reuse these structures as a way...

  • Top 100 Albums of 2007 (50-74)

photo by Matt Craig50. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - 100 Days, 100 NightsSharon Jones has been singing since the 70s and was even a prison guard for a short time. Her live performance is unbelievably tight, inspiring feel-good shimmying all throughout the night. There's been a ton of revivalism of outmoded genres this year and Jones is bringin' back the funk! This record sounds like it came from the mid 60s during the height...

  • Top 100 Albums of 2007 (75-100)

    75. The Cave Singers - Invitation SongsAccording to Seattleist, guitarist Derek Fudesco makes "sammiches" during the day and strums hypnotic lines by night. The Cave Singers encapsulate all that I love about the Northwest. Invitation Songs is chocked full of cozy, folk-bluegrass-tinged battle songs. "Helen" is built upon one savory guitar line and handful of reverb. Think Mountain Goats meets Will Oldham. The Cave Singers - "Lena" &righticonhover=0x333232&text=0x333232&slider=0xF2F2F2&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0xFFFFFF&loader=0x838383&soundFile=http://www.box.net/shared/static/7vw3ha90kk.mp3"> 76. • The Airborne Toxic Event's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...

  • CMJ Day Five: A Recapitulation

As one blogger so delicately phrased it, "CMJ goes out with a whimper". There wasn't a whole lot I wanted to see on Day Five of CMJ. So I rested my weary bones, wandered around Williamsburg, and caught a couple of shows. One highlight was Ha Ha Tonka's performance at Union Pool in Williamsburg at a homey, jam-packed venue. I believe there was a BBQ going on as well. Williamsburg was lovely, flourishing with...

  • Editor's Picks - The Best of the Week of LAist

Here are some of my favorite LAist stories from this week: Anti reviews a cd that was sent to him, he gives it a "Good", but someone from the band writes in to complain that it wasn't a good enough Peggy Archer showed us that Malibu is finding that whoring out their best beachfront homes to corporations isn't all they hoped it would be Charles Bukowski is my favorite writer, so I liked this...

  • 10 Best CDs of the First Half of the Year

The assignment was simple - of all the great music that gets sent to us, I had to pick the top ten new cds whose street dates were between January 1, 2007 - June 15, 2007. Despite the fact that so many good records have come out in that time the selections were surprisingly easy to come about. 10. Datarock Datarock Datarock Nettwerk Music Released in the US: June 12, 2007 Datarock - "Bulldozer"...
